Tutoring Services: Project Excel provides free tutoring in all classes to participants that need the additional help. Last year we arranged for tutoring in forty-three different classes and had over seventy students receive individual tutoring. We recommend that students start with a tutor in the beginning of the semester for difficult classes. If the student decides that a tutor is not needed they can stop at anytime. However, it is difficult to bring a grade up in the middle of the semester so it is best to plan ahead. Students that seek help EARLY in the semester have a higher success rate. For more information contact Lori Drew.
Academic and Personal Counseling: Project Excel offers free, confidential, short-term counseling services for participants and referral services for students who need longer term counseling. Angela Ryan-Williams is able to work with students to improve time management skills, study skills, and personal issues. She is also able to link adult students to appropriate community resources.
Services for Students with Disabilities: Mary Etter, the learning specialist, is available to meet with students who have a documented disability. She will arrange for any reasonable accommodations and is available for consultation with students and faculty. Project Excel has many resources for students with learning disabilities and other disabilities that can affect academic performance. Students are encouraged to stay in touch throughout the year.
Scholarships and Financial Aid Advising: Project Excel has scholarships available for their students that receive a Pell Grant. These scholarships are usually given out during the Spring Semester. Looking for other resources to help pay for college? Concerned about loans? Need help filling out the FAFSA? Bob McCabe is available to answer specific questions and help you navigate the financial aid maze.
Laptop Lending Program: Project Excel provides a free laptop lending program to participants. Project Excel participants are able to borrow laptop computers for two days at a time. Students that do not have their own computers or are going home for a weekend, really benefit from the opportunity to have access to software that is compatible with the LSC campus. “I would not have been able to complete my research project without having access to the laptop computer from Excel. I was able to do my project while I was working over the weekend.” (Adult Student) Project Excel laptops are frequently updated to stay current with the software used on campus, and some of the laptops have high end graphic capability and statistical programs. Other software programs are available upon request.
