Beth Kanell, author of The Darkness Under the Water, will speak on the subject of heroines in fiction and how young women of varying backgrounds can find heroines that are meaningful to them.

For 2009-2010, Lyndon's chapter of Vermont Women in Higher Education is offering a film series that deals with gender assumptions and the media. A panel discussion will take place immediately following the films. Snacks and beverages will be provided at all film events.

Jean Kilbourne continues her groundbreaking analysis of advertising's depiction of women in this most recent update of her pioneering Killing Us Softly series. In fascinating detail, Kilbourne decodes an array of print and television advertisements to reveal a pattern of disturbing and destructive gender stereotypes. Her analysis challenges us to consider the relationship between advertising and broader issues of culture, identity, sexism, and gender violence

Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity

While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century.

In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity.

Our panelists will include Greg MacDonald, Field Director for the Agency of Human Services (St. J and Newport region) and founder of the local chapter of the White Ribbon Campaign.
