Psychologists and Human Services workers make a positive difference in people’s lives, every day.

What can you do with a degree in Human Services from Lyndon State?  A lot! You can lend a helping hand to a child in need, support an elder who needs a little extra care and assistance, or help youth offenders transition back into the community.

Students who study Human Services are motivated, caring people. They’re ready to engage in the challenging coursework and field placement experiences that our program provides to help them to become competent professionals and leaders in their communities.

A degree in Human Services from Lyndon provides you with the academic coursework and the hands-on experience to prepare you for jobs like these -- and for entrance into graduate programs. Many of our students have gone on to pursue Masters degrees in psychology, social work, human services or counseling. Some recent graduates have continued their studies at the University of Connecticut, St. Michael’s College, Montana State University, Barry University, Johnson State and the University of Tennessee.

Real Life Experiences
At Lyndon, the experience is the education. Whether your major is psychology or human services, you’ll have the opportunity to take the sophomore-level Field Work course. Field Work will provide you with 80 hours of in-the-field experience at a placement of interest to you. Students have completed field placements at local schools, community agencies, the Department of Corrections, a teen drop-in center, a domestic violence advocacy program – and many others. Students not only learn – they make a difference!

Human Services major have many opportunities to engage in hands-on work applying what you learn in the classroom to real-life experiences.

  • The junior-level Macro Perspectives in Human Services offers you the chance to engage in service learning projects and work to make our communities better places in which to live. Some service learning projects have included creating a teen violence prevention program, working to guarantee health care to everyone in the state of Vermont and educating the public about the risk involved with consumption of Alcopops.


     
  • The senior-level Human Services Internship course prepares you for life after graduation. You’ll complete a 300 hour internship at an agency of interest to you. Students have travelled near and far (including Alaska!) to complete their internships. Some internships have turned into jobs for students upon graduation. Internship sites have included:
    - The Vermont Commission on Women helping them to prepare a statewide conference.
    - The Davenport Residential Program in New Hampshire working with troubled youth.
    - The Department of Children and Families working with abused children and their families.
    - Cottage Hospital in New Hampshire working on the medical unit.
    - The Boys and Girls Club in Burlington helping to establish special summer programs for children.
