The philosophy of the department of Natural Science is to foster an inquisitive and appreciative attitude about the natural world that surrounds us. We explore the structure and patterns that exist in the natural world and consider the processes responsible for those patterns.

Courses in astronomy explore both the structure and the origin of the universe; courses in geology cover the structure of the earth’s crust and the processes which led to its formation; and courses in biology consider the kinds of organisms that inhabit our planet as well as the evolutionary processes responsible for our biodiversity.

In other classes, we delve deeply into the chemistry of the natural world. These explorations embrace the great diversity of atoms and molecules and their fascinating interactions and reactions. And finally, but perhaps most importantly, we study the laws of physics in order to understand the fundamental composition of matter and the physical explanations for natural phenomena occurring at many scales from the subatomic to the planetary and beyond.

This core of basic science courses introduces the student to each of the disciplines and builds a broad background in science from which they may specialize in their junior and senior years.

Outstanding in our fields.
LSC’s Vermont location provides a unique natural laboratory. In fact, National Geographic has chosen the Northeast Kingdom for a pilot GeoTourism program — one of only four sites on the entire planet!

Further afield, students are exploring the Western Mountains, the Grand Canyon, or the California Sierras; and those enrolled in Advanced Systematic Botany spend a week in the tropical rainforests of Puerto Rico.

AT A GLANCE
Students who choose Natural Science as their major are students who want to teach, go to medical school, or simply want a solid background in the various sciences. We have a 10:1 student:faculty ratio. 90% of graduates find employment in their field as teachers, lab technicians, staff scientists, environmental scientists, chemists, and quality control engineers
