Place: In classes and ATT or Burke Mountain Room presentation
Time: TBA
Description: The director of a non-profit private school in Guatemala, Jorge Chojolán, will be visiting LSC and the surrounding areas to present about Guatemala, the school and the process and struggle Jorge went through to create and maintain the school. The school gives opportunity to a fair education for under-privileged and oppressed groups in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala by providing scholarships on a sliding scale to students. The curriculum of the school is based on the theories of Paulo Frier and teaches the students about their reality and attempts to break social norms (such as oppression against females and indigenous peoples). A group of 11 LSC students volunteered at the school in February 2009 and another trip will be taking place in February 2010. Tim Cappalli will present a completed documentary that the students all helped to create during the trip in February 2009 and there will hopefully be an art auction to help raise money for the February 2010 trip and to make a donation to the school in Guatemala. The exact details of the trip are still being planed (i.e. – which classes he’ll be visiting, when the movie will be shown, etc).
